System Purpose and Boundaries
Sand washing produces a recirculating stream that may contain fine sand, silt, clay and process water. The system objective is to separate recoverable solids from the water stream, return clarified water where the site process permits, and provide a manageable route for dewatered solids. Water clarity after separation is not the same as compliance with a discharge limit; the required target must be defined by the site and verified by testing.
This is a system page rather than a material-only application page. The sand-washing application page describes the slurry characteristics and selection data to collect. This page describes how collection, conditioning, filtration, water return, solids discharge and controls connect on site. Automatic operation and membrane squeezing are options to evaluate independently: automation concerns sequence and operator tasks, while a membrane stage concerns the dewatering cycle and pressure limits confirmed for the selected equipment.
How the Connected Process Works
A practical arrangement begins at the wash plant. Drainage and wash-water streams are directed to a collection or equalization point. A feed route then sends the selected slurry to the filter press or other upstream separation equipment. Filtrate or clarified water is routed to a tank or process return line only after the site confirms the required quality and hydraulic arrangement. Filter cake is discharged to a designated handling area, conveyor, stockpile or further treatment step.
The return loop should include sampling locations before and after the separation stage. Operators need to distinguish settled water, filtrate and final discharge water, because each point can have a different solids concentration and purpose. The press cycle must remain a defined sequence: filling, filtration, optional squeezing when the selected configuration supports it, depressurization and cake discharge. Cake washing is not a default step for sand-washing water recycling and should be included only when the process objective requires it.
- Collect wash-water and fine solids without allowing uncontrolled overflow or short-circuiting.
- Confirm tank volume, pump duty, elevation and pipe routing from the actual site layout.
- Send a representative slurry stream to the selected separation stage.
- Route filtrate to reuse, additional treatment or discharge according to the verified water target.
- Move filter cake safely and define who removes, stores or reuses the solids.
| Process point | What to define before selection |
|---|---|
| Slurry collection | Source streams, peak and normal flow, solids settling behavior and tank arrangement |
| Feed and filtration | Pump type, suction conditions, pipe size, elevation and expected operating sequence |
| Water return | Reuse destination, sampling point, allowable suspended solids target and overflow route |
| Cake handling | Discharge location, access, conveyor or loading method and wet-solid handling plan |
Main Modules and Site Interfaces
A complete system may include collection tanks, agitation or mixing where needed, feed pumps, valves, a filter press, filtrate piping, a cake discharge arrangement and a control panel. The exact module list depends on the wash plant, slurry behavior and civil works. A polymer dosing system is not automatically required; if conditioning is proposed, its purpose, material compatibility, control method and test basis should be confirmed separately.
Shengqi can review the equipment-side interfaces, but the site must identify civil, electrical and utility responsibilities. The system drawing should show inlet and outlet elevations, pipe supports, drains, access around the press, cable routes, emergency isolation and the destination of both water and cake. The boundary between supplied equipment and plant works should be recorded before quotation.
| Interface | Buyer or site confirmation | Supplier review |
|---|---|---|
| Slurry inlet | Source tank, pipe route, elevation, isolation and cleaning access | Feed connection, valve arrangement and pump interface |
| Filtrate outlet | Return tank capacity, discharge route and sampling location | Outlet routing and drain points shown on layout |
| Cake discharge | Clearance, conveyor or loading method and traffic access | Press discharge height and optional handling interface |
| Utilities and control | Power standard, cable route, water or air availability and operator location | Equipment control signals, alarms and sequence boundary |
Data Needed for System Selection
Do not size this system from the name of the sand or from a single water sample. Provide normal and peak wash-water conditions, the source of each stream, wet slurry flow with its unit, approximate solids concentration, particle-size information when available, temperature, pH, clay content and any abrasive or corrosive characteristics. Also state whether the objective is process-water reuse, solids recovery, discharge preparation or a combination.
A representative test sample is more useful when its collection time, location and preservation are recorded. If data are uncertain, mark the field Not Sure rather than inserting a guessed value. Laboratory or pilot filtration may be appropriate before finalizing the press area, chamber arrangement, cloth selection or cycle assumptions.
- Site layout with tank levels, pipe runs, access and proposed cake destination.
- Normal and peak flow in a stated unit, operating hours and wash-plant schedule.
- Slurry sample description, wet mass or volume, solids estimate and settling observations.
- Required water reuse point and any documented discharge or process-quality target.
- Power standard, available utilities, ambient conditions and preferred control responsibility.
- Photos of the collection tank, existing pumps, pipe connections and available installation area.
Filter Press and Water-Quality Decisions
A filter press can separate solids from water, but the press model and cycle must be matched to the actual slurry. Chamber, membrane or automatic arrangements are different decisions: a chamber arrangement forms the filter chambers; a membrane arrangement adds a later squeezing stage when specified; an automatic arrangement coordinates selected movements and controls but does not remove the need for safe operator oversight. The pages for chamber, membrane and automatic filter presses should be reviewed with the test and layout data.
Filtration area describes the filtering surface available in a configuration; it is not a guaranteed plant throughput. Wet slurry feed, dry-solids loading, cycle time and water quality are separate measurements. Likewise, a clear-looking filtrate is not a universal certificate of water quality. Sampling and testing must establish whether returned water is suitable for the intended wash circuit.
Installation, Commissioning and Operating Responsibilities
Before delivery, confirm the foundation, lifting route, service clearance, drainage, pipe supports, electrical supply and safe access for cloth and plate inspection. The site should provide completed civil works and utilities, connect external tanks and pipework, and identify an operator who can follow the approved sequence. Commissioning should verify empty runs, valve directions, pump behavior, leak checks, interlocks, sample points and the destination of water and cake before routine loading.
Operators should monitor feed behavior, filtrate appearance, tank levels, cake discharge and any abnormal vibration or leakage. They should record cycle observations rather than treating a nominal setting as a universal recipe. Any change in sand source, clay content, wash-water balance or target reuse quality may require a new review or test.
| Stage | Practical check | Responsible boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Before installation | Foundation, access, lifting, pipe elevations, drains and power are confirmed | Site prepares works; supplier reviews equipment interface |
| Dry commissioning | Controls, alarms, valve direction, pump rotation and emergency isolation are checked | Authorized personnel only; follow equipment safety procedure |
| Wet commissioning | Flow path, sampling, filtrate route and cake discharge are observed | Site supplies representative slurry and receiving areas |
| Routine operation | Levels, leaks, cloth condition, cake behavior and water target are recorded | Site operator follows approved sequence and maintenance plan |
Maintenance and Replacement Parts
Maintenance starts with safe isolation and a confirmed zero-energy condition. Never open a press while it is under pressure, never perform electrical work while energized, and never bypass an interlock. Inspect filter cloths, plate sealing faces, feed and filtrate lines, valves, pumps, hydraulic components and cake discharge equipment according to the approved maintenance instructions. Water and solids can hide leakage paths, so inspection should include the press frame and surrounding floor.
Filter cloths and plates are process-contact parts. A replacement request should include the equipment nameplate, front, back and side photographs, plate dimensions, chamber depth, hole positions, sealing details, handles, compression or squeeze connections, material and operating conditions. For cloths, include the fastening form, center or corner holes, neck and edge construction, dimensions, stitching and the original cloth sample or photographs. The measurement guide can help prepare this information before a quotation.
- Stop the cycle and isolate pressure, electrical energy and connected equipment before inspection.
- Record the location and conditions of any leak, blinding, tearing, deformation or abnormal cake release.
- Clean cloths using a method compatible with the cloth, plate and slurry; do not apply an unverified chemical recipe.
- Replace parts only after dimensions, hole pattern, sealing arrangement and material compatibility are reviewed.
- Keep a record of the slurry source and operating change when a new cloth or plate is requested.
System Selection Checklist
A useful quotation package identifies what is known, what is measured and what still needs confirmation. Submit the following checklist with drawings and photos so the equipment boundary can be reviewed without turning uncertain data into a performance promise.
| Decision item | Evidence to submit | Selection consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Water-loop objective | Reuse point, target, sample results or compliance document | Defines return route and whether additional treatment is needed |
| Solids load | Wet slurry rate, solids estimate, sample and operating hours | Guides press arrangement and cycle review; not a fixed capacity promise |
| Site constraints | Layout, elevations, access, power and drainage | Determines module placement and external works |
| Equipment match | Existing press nameplate, plate and cloth photos if replacing | Confirms compatibility before parts or retrofit quotation |
| Operations | Operator availability, control preference and discharge handling | Defines automation boundary and manual tasks |
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this system guarantee water suitable for discharge?
No. A filter press separates solids, while discharge suitability depends on the water target, sampling method, downstream treatment and local requirements. Confirm the target and test representative samples before finalizing the return or discharge route.
Is a polymer dosing unit always part of sand-washing water recycling?
No. Conditioning depends on slurry behavior and test results. If it is considered, its purpose, compatibility and operating method should be reviewed as a separate selection decision.
Can an automatic press also use a membrane squeeze stage?
Potentially, when the selected equipment is configured and tested for both functions. Automation describes the sequence and operator interface; membrane squeezing describes a dewatering stage. They are not mutually exclusive, but neither should be assumed without confirmation.
What information is needed for an initial quotation?
Send the site layout, normal and peak slurry flow with units, solids estimate, sample description, water-reuse objective, operating hours, utilities, cake destination and photos of existing equipment or connections. Mark unknown values as Not Sure.
How should replacement plates or cloths be matched in an existing loop?
Provide the nameplate, clear front, back, side and handle photographs, dimensions, chamber depth, hole positions, sealing and connection details, material and operating conditions. Review the measurement guide before ordering.
What is the difference between filtrate and final recycled water?
Filtrate is the liquid leaving the filter during the press cycle. Recycled water is the stream selected for return to the wash circuit after its routing and quality have been assessed. They may be connected, but they are not automatically equivalent.
What safety rule applies during inspection?
Stop the cycle, isolate pressure and electrical energy, verify the zero-energy condition and follow the approved procedure. Never open a press under pressure, perform energized electrical work or bypass an interlock.
